What is the difference between SEO and GEO?

SEO (search engine optimization) aims to rank a web page in a list of search results so people click it. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) aims to have a business cited, mentioned, or recommended inside an AI-written answer. GEO builds on SEO: the same crawling, indexing, and quality signals feed both.

Is GEO a replacement for SEO?

GEO is not a replacement for SEO. Google's May 2026 guide "Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search" says that, from Google Search's perspective, optimizing for generative AI "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO." Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on the same index and ranking systems as regular Google Search.

SEO still drives far more website traffic than AI tools do. Ahrefs' analysis of 76,000 websites in Ahrefs Web Analytics, published February 11, 2026, found that Google sends about 190 times more traffic to websites than ChatGPT. Google accounted for nearly 40% of traffic to those sites, and ChatGPT for 0.21%.

How does selection differ between search rankings and AI answers?

Search engines rank a list of pages for a query. AI answer engines pick a few sources to support a written answer. The selected pages often differ from the top organic results. Ahrefs' March 2, 2026 study of 863,000 keyword results and 4 million AI Overview URLs found that only 37.9% of pages cited in Google AI Overviews ranked in the top 10 for the same query. That share was 76% in Ahrefs' July 2025 study.

Ahrefs links the drop to "fan-out" queries, where Google's AI runs related sub-searches and cites pages that rank for those sub-searches. Ahrefs also says its parsing improved between the two studies, so part of the drop reflects better measurement. Ranking still matters, but ranking for the exact keyword no longer predicts an AI Overview citation.

ChatGPT's sources differ even more from Google's results. Ahrefs' study of ChatGPT's 1,000 most-cited pages found that 28.3% had no organic visibility in Google at all. ChatGPT search draws on third-party search providers. OpenAI names Bing as one, and a 2026 RESONEO analysis in Search Engine Land reports that OpenAI also runs its own web index.

Which signals matter more for GEO than for SEO?

Third-party mentions matter more for GEO. Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands found that YouTube mentions (correlation about 0.737) and branded web mentions (about 0.66) tracked AI visibility much more closely than backlinks (about 0.218). For independent businesses, reviews, directories, local press, and community discussions shape what AI systems say.

Content formatting and evidence matter for GEO. The 2023 GEO paper by Aggarwal et al. found that adding statistics, quotations, and cited sources raised visibility in generative engine answers by up to 40%, while keyword stuffing did not help. Content length does not matter much. Ahrefs found a near-zero correlation (0.04) between word count and AI Overview citations across 174,048 cited pages.

Freshness matters for GEO. In Ahrefs' study of 26,283 ChatGPT source URLs, 79.1% of the cited "best X" lists had been updated in 2025. Updating key pages with current facts and dates helps both search engines and AI systems.

Which technical steps apply to GEO?

GEO requires that AI search crawlers can reach a site. OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot to appear in ChatGPT search. OpenAI notes that ChatGPT-User fetches pages on request from users, and that robots.txt rules "may not apply" to it. Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot. Anthropic says blocking Claude-SearchBot may reduce visibility in Claude's search results. Google's AI features rely on Googlebot.

Google-Extended is often misunderstood. Google's crawler documentation (updated July 14, 2026) says Google-Extended "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search." Google-Extended controls whether content is used for Gemini model training and grounding in Gemini Apps. Blocking Google-Extended is a separate business decision. It is not a Google Search or AI Overviews visibility setting.

Bing indexing is a low-cost safeguard, not a guaranteed gate. OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers and names Bing among them. Verifying a site in Bing Webmaster Tools also covers Microsoft Copilot. Since OpenAI also has its own index, a missing Bing listing is no longer a confirmed cause of ChatGPT invisibility.

Which GEO tactics are overrated?

Some popular GEO tactics have little support. Google's May 2026 guide says site owners can ignore content "chunking," llms.txt files, AI-specific rewriting, and inauthentic mentions. Google also says no special schema is needed for generative AI search. Ahrefs' 2026 study of 137,000 sites found that 97% of llms.txt files received no requests at all.

Key takeaways

  • SEO earns rankings and clicks. GEO earns citations and recommendations inside AI answers.
  • Google calls AEO and GEO "still SEO" for Google Search.
  • Only 37.9% of AI Overview citations ranked in Google's top 10 in Ahrefs' March 2026 data.
  • Third-party mentions correlate with AI visibility far more than backlinks do.
  • Google still sends about 190x more website traffic than ChatGPT, so SEO remains the foundation.

Questions and answers

Do I need to choose between SEO and GEO?

Choosing is unnecessary. GEO builds on SEO. A crawlable, indexed, trustworthy site with a strong reputation off the site serves both.

Does ranking #1 on Google mean AI will cite me?

A #1 ranking does not guarantee an AI citation. Ahrefs found that only 37.9% of AI Overview citations ranked in the top 10 for the same query in its March 2026 study.

Is Bing important for ChatGPT visibility?

Bing matters, but it is not the whole story. OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party providers, Bing among them, and independent 2026 research reports OpenAI also runs its own index.

Should I block AI crawlers?

Blocking AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, or Claude-SearchBot reduces the chance of being cited by those platforms. Training crawlers such as GPTBot and ClaudeBot, and the Google-Extended token, are separate choices.

How do I measure GEO?

Measure GEO through citation and mention tracking, AI referral traffic in analytics, and Google Search Console's generative AI performance reporting, alongside regular SEO metrics.
